"It was the location that drew us to our home at 3 Moss View Ct. Highfields is a true hidden gem, surrounded by greenspace and quietly nestled between the Rolling Hills Golf Club, Patapsco Valley State Park, and UMBC campus. It’s amazing how many people don’t even know the neighborhood is here!
Coming home to our quiet, lush neighborhood is always a delight! The layout of our tree lined backyard affords us a great deal of privacy, so Sunday morning coffee on the deck in our pjs is always special treat. The views from the master bedroom are astounding, although we greatly miss the Key Bridge, but the four-season sunroom is perhaps the comfiest room in the house. What we’ll miss most about our home are the views. From the glorious sunrises to fireworks across the horizon that range from Baltimore City to Anne Arundel County on New Year’s Eve and the 4th of July, the views from the master bedroom, sunroom, and deck are beyond compare. As an added bonus, we can watch the Catonsville fireworks from the front porch! A little-known secret is that UMBC celebrates the beginning and end of every academic year with impressive fireworks show and we have a bird's eye view these in August and May! Chief among the upgrades we’ve completed were adding a high efficiency Carrier Infinity HVAC system (A/C, thermostat, and gas furnace) with an Aprilaire whole house air cleaner and humidifier in 2014. Kitchen and laundry appliances were upgraded soon afterward, and the water heater was replaced in 2017. The siding, gutters and roof were replaced in 2018, and the kitchen faucet and disposal were upgraded in 2019. In 2022, we expanded the deck, upgraded it to composite, and as a precaution, reinforced the sunroom. In 2023, we added the pergola and repaired all window screens. More recent updates (2024) include granite countertops, new paint throughout, new carpet and flooring, and new light fixtures in the kitchen, downstairs and hall baths, and a new ceiling fan in the master bedroom.
Highfields is a safe, friendly, and inviting community. The quiet streets and cul-de-sacs are ideal for evening walks, but the Catonsville Y and RAC at UMBC are also just a short walk away. HOA-sponsored events include multiple summer block parties, Kona Ice truck visits, and outdoor family movie nights, Halloween parties for the kids, an annual December party complete with a visit from Santa and the fire trucks, plus a Care and Connection committee dedicated to neighbors in need of a little help. In December, volunteers distribute outdoor luminaries to each home to light the way for Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve. On the 4th of July, neighbors often gather at the corner of Moss View Court to watch the annual Catonsville fireworks together. We also have a Little Free Library for kids and well-advertised annual garage sales in the spring and fall.
Some of the things we love most about living in Catonsville are great schools, great libraries (Arbutus, Catonsville, and UMBC), and a plethora of great shops and restaurants. Highfields has the distinction of being conveniently located between Catonsville and Arbutus, both of which are known for quaint coffee shops, good restaurants, street festivals and markets, and their annual 4th of July parades. We also love our proximity to the MARC, Amtrak, BWI, and the city.
Among our favorite Catonsville restaurants are Charlsie's for breakfast, Scittino's for pizza, Matthew's 1600 for lunch and dinner. We're also fans of Maiwand Kabob near BWI. We moved to Baltimore County for the public school system and Catonsville for its proximity to UMBC and Columbia where we worked. We fell in love with Catonsville's small town feel with all the amenities of city life. Our children thrived in the local community."
